you are covered from head to toe

Have you caught wind of Christy Nockels latest album, Be Held: Lullabies for the Beloved?

I think the vision for this album is songs to sing over your children, but it is powerful and inspiring even for my 25 year old soul. This song about the armor of God has filled my car for most of my driving lately.

I ask Holy Spirit to deeply embed inside us truth of God’s armor available to us. I ask Him to give us ability and desire to step into this armor daily.

Even though you might be small
It is in you His kingdom reigns
And from your mouth the Lord has made
A fountain for His praise

+++++

To be honest, the armor of God is a biblical topic that I know and believe in, but like others in the Bible, can become dull if I’m not careful. I’ve probably Ephesians 6 every year, in church, in school, running across it in my own studying. But I never want any word of God’s to become stale to me. Right? It’s fiery, alive, and beautifully relevant.

I don’t want this beautiful reality I could walk in to sit idle.

And with His righteousness, across your chest
Salvation for your head
The belt of truth, around you now
With the shield of faith in hand
And with His peace, upon your feet
Everywhere you go
His word will be the sword you keep
You’re covered head to toe

His righteousness, covering our most sacred: our heart and breath.

Glorious salvation and freedom for our heads, to stand tall and confident, looking Heavenward.

A belt of Truth, wrapped around us, holding us together and steady.

Our shield of faith, to battle the enemy’s darts and lies.

His peace at our feet, to tread across all matters of rocky, uncertain, burning-lava-type ground in this lifetime.

His Word as our sword, to fight back, to be prepared, to attack that which doesn’t want us near God.

The weapon of the word of God serves the wielding power of prayer by giving words to prayer. And now you can see that the power that wields the sword of the Spirit is not really our power. Prayer, when it is full of power is full of the word of God. The sword of the Spirit is wielded by the power of the Spirit. The sword is full of the electricity of God. When we touch it with prayer the current of divine power runs up our arm. And the wielding power becomes the very power of God. John Piper

Hello. A-M-E-N. God is incredibly fascinating.

+++++

And turn your worries into songs
Put on your covering of light
And you will long outlast the darkness
Because He’s with you in this fight

The ESV Study Bible says this of Ephesians 6:10-18: His [Paul’s] imagery is a sustained portrayal of the Christian life as spiritual warfare using the Lord’s resources.

He doesn’t leave us to battle expecting us to muster up our own. Hallelujah. He gives us everything and more than we need.

We will long outlast any darkness, because He is with us in each and every fight.

Wowzers.

For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? — the God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless. He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. Psalm 18:31-35

Our God of infinite, perfect, almighty resources is the designer of our armor.

I believe His desire for us is to walk confidently through our days, claiming His resources, depending on His abilities over our own.

Do you walk covered? Believe these words of God and live victoriously, giving Him glory.

Speak His Truth over dark and difficult situations, yours or a friend’s. Stand tall and strong, knowing Jesus’ righteousness is yours. Know that faith in God Most High, the great I AM, protects you ultimately from everything harmful.

Holy Spirit, help us walk into these days of uncertainty and excitement, covered from head to toe with the things of God.

Instead, we ought to approach Lent as an opportunity, not a requirement. After all, it is meant to be the church’s springtime, a time when, out of the darkness of sin’s winter, a repentant, empowered people emerges. No wonder one liturgy refers to it as “this joyful season.”
