If there was ever a time to beat a path back to Jesus over and over and over again, it’s right now. He wants us to come if we are weary and heavy-laden. He is a vibrant, rushing stream, not an above-ground pool. No two steps in are alike. His mercy is an ocean, His love steadfast, His grace sufficient, His peace vast.
Luke 6:20 says, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” It is better for you to be poor and needy when your source is God than to be wealthy and able and strong when your source is you. On this passage, David Guzik says this, “As long as we keep illusions about our own spiritual resources, we will never receive from God what we absolutely need.”
“He is the one answer to every question, concern, fear, and need we will ever have. And so he simply and comprehensively offers us himself. For our hope is from him. Only in him will we find rest for our souls.”

Come hungry. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” John 6:35
Come thirsty. “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14
Come empty. “…for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Psalm 107:9
Come needing joy. “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.” Psalm 40:1-3 (or Psalm 28:7)
Come struggling with sin. “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:24-25 (or Psalm 51:1-2)
Come thankful. “I love you, O Lord, my strength… I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.” Psalm 18:1,3
Come angry. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.” Psalm 22:1-3
Come afraid. “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” Isaiah 41:13
Come sad: “You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God.” Psalm 71:20-22a
Come disappointed. “As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!” Psalm 40:17
Come needing comfort. “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.” Psalm 57:1
Come nervous. “The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? … Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.” Psalm 27:1b,3
Come overwhelmed. “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses.” Psalm 25:16-17
Come depressed. “For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness. For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God — His way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” Psalm 18:28-30
Come weakly. “But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.” Psalm 3:3 (or Psalm 63:7-8 or Psalm 18:6)
Come dry. “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price…. Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live.” Isaiah 55:1,2b-3
Come exhausted. “Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also. For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away… But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hand.” Psalm 31:9-10,14
Come confused. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
“Jesus does not want our souls resting on the how and when, as if we are wise enough to understand and determine them. Rather he wants our souls resting on the surety that he will keep his promise to us in the best way at the best time.”
