We all have those bands or songs that mean a little bit more, don’t we? The lyrics that crack us open or the albums that hold us together. I can think of a handful of songs that have ministered to me in various seasons of challenge or joy, as well as songs that never get old to me.
Participating in a writer’s group, I spent a few minutes remembering chapters in my life and the soundtracks that went with them. I could share probably 10 songs that have made significant marks on me, songs of worship especially. But for the sake of simplicity I’m choosing a lyric that is a heart cry for today.
It’s from a song by Steffany Gretzinger called ‘No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus.’
Let my children tell their children
Let this be their memory
That all my treasure was in heaven
And you were everything to me
No one ever cared for me like Jesus
His faithful hand has held me all this way
These lyrics are both stabilizing and energizing. I hope my legacy is that of intimacy with God. I hope that the main thing I pass down to my daughters and their children is the living, breathing, practiced belief that ‘The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing.’
To walk with Christ — in Christ and for Christ — through life is my truest and sweetest reality. I pray it is becomes the same for all those I will have loved and shared life with at the end of my days.
