- Acknowledge and accept that what worked yesterday might not work today, and that what didn’t work this morning might work 3 days from now.
- Being delighted to see your toddler every time they enter the room speaks volumes. And should maybe (definitely?) be a lifetime habit.
- Assume the best in your spouse. You’re both super tired and doing the best you can.
- You (I) may not have the capacity for reading chapters of the Bible, but find some outlet for His Word and get it in you. For me lately it’s been picking up The Message version whenever I have a free moment of downtime.
- I’m seeing how important it is to balance the many new “Nos” I have to say to Anna with positive, affirming “Yeses.”
- If you find yourself down or overwhelmed, get more of God in your vision. Find a pocket of quiet, rehearse your favorite psalm, listen to worship music, get outside and say Thank You — whatever draws your thoughts to your Father.
- It has made a big difference when Julia is asleep that I don’t only do tasks that need to be completed, but give Anna my full attention for play and conversation.
- Keep the snacks stocked and water glasses filled. #pumpingmama
- Get a second laundry basket for all the laundry. (We only have one. Definitely seeing the need for another one.)
- Remembering how I’m seen and loved by God… in the midnight hour, at the tedious 3pm, during a stressful moment… is extremely comforting. He knows all the things I’m holding and managing, and His eyes are always kind and His arms are always open.
- Lifesaver: leisurely drives around the area. Nap time for the newborn, books and music time for the toddler.
- I’m prioritizing brushing my teeth more than I did with Anna… so, fist bumps all around.
- God bless good friends who check in, drop off random items and pray for me. And Instacart grocery delivery.
- Be present in the moment, say Thanks or Help to God, but also find the image that helps you keep your perspective above water. For me, I’ve been thinking about how cool it will be to go on adventures with both girls. This trial-and-error, exhausting season won’t last forever.
