Inspired by another’s words, a writer I enjoy: “One of my practices for 2023 is the practice of being here, which, for me, means being acutely aware of what here is asking of me and what being here means for me.”
Live from here, not there.
Here, with my not-pretty feelings.
Not there, when I’m put together and pleasing.
Here, with my real needs and desires.
Not there, covering, hiding and performing.
Here, with these people.
Not there, with easier-to-love and less messy people.
Here, with those circumstances.
Not there, where things are far smoother or clearer or easier.
Here, this moment of obedience.
Not there, when I’m more rested or it comes easily or I fully understand.
Here, when things are unresolved and evolving and changing.
Not there, when all is “perfect.”
Here is where He meets me.
Here is where we start anything, in any new or familiar direction, together.
I can be here and only here. My limitations speak loudly enough to that. And it’s okay.
Here is where I am. So it’s where God is. Being God.
The invitation is always extended: Will you say Yes to Me, here?
Will you surrender, trust, worship, here? Will you listen and follow, from here?
With God as a constant companion, I’m never alone here, and that changes everything.
